Giving and Your Legacy
Judi Komaki
"I believe fair and equal treatment is the right of every person, in every corner of the country – regardless of one’s race, religion, economic circumstance or sexual orientation. Every day, the ACLU empowers those courageous people who are willing to stand up for those values."
Judi found that planning a bequest to the ACLU was the perfect way to express her deeply held values and help preserve our freedoms for future generations.
As Judi tells it:
For the past couple of years, I’ve known that I needed to begin my estate planning. But I really wasn't sure how to go about getting started.
So I contacted Tracy, one of the ACLU's gift planning officers. She was so helpful. She sent me a packet of very useful information, but I still had questions. We talked about what steps I could take to begin my planning and more importantly, the questions I needed to ask myself.
Tracy was also ready with suggestions on what to consider when selecting an attorney: everything from fees and consultations to timing and communication style. When I finally met with a lawyer, I felt empowered and confident.
I was so happy and relieved to finally make my will, but I was also very proud because I was able to include a bequest to the ACLU in my plans. The help I received from the ACLU was invaluable.
My hope is that sharing this experience might also encourage fellow civil libertarians who want to do their part to help keep the ACLU strong and principled beyond our lifetimes.
